Description

Jupiter and Saturn were separated by about 0.2 degrees on the night of December 22, 2020, one day past closest approach during the Great Conjunction of 2020. Just after sunset I tried imaging in IR to get the telescope aligned and see what I could make out before it was dark enough for grab some RGB runs. Jupiter and Saturn were faintly visible against the bright background sky, but tough to pull much if any detail from. About 15 minutes later it was dark enough for RGB runs which were my primary imaging plan for the night.

Imaged with a William Optics GT81, 2x Siebert Barlow, Baader IR 685nm pass filter, and ZWO ASI290MM. Imaging train was configured to give ~F/12 (`~950 mm focal length. Image capture using Sharpcap. Stacking in AutoStakkert3 (best 25% of 1000 frames). Processed in Registax (wavelet sharpening). Adjusted background levels using curves transformation in PixInsight (with the planets masked).
