Description

This object, also known as NGC 1023, is a barred lenticular galaxy located "only" 35 million light years away in the constellation of Perseus at a declination of +39 degrees. This is the nearest lenticular galaxy to us. The galaxy spans 7 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a width of 70,000 light years. This is a bright galaxy, with a magnitude of 9.3 and a surface brightness of 13. It is inclined almost 20 degrees from edge-on.

This galaxy was classified by Arp in the category of "Galaxies with Nearby Fragments", which is referring to the small blue dwarf companion galaxy just left and below NGC 1023. This galaxy is known as NGC 1023A. Looking closely at this dwarf galaxy in the full resolution view, you will see two blue dots which map to two star clusters in that dwarf companion galaxy. I believe that this is the furthest distance away (35 million light years) at which I have been able to image an extragalactic star cluster.

Two other dwarf galaxies are also visible in this image. NGC 1023B is even further to the left, about halfway between the image center and the left edge. NGC 1023D is the blue galaxy at the bottom center of the image.

NGC 1023 has several distinct brightness regions in its disk. Particularly interesting to me is the oval area of brightness around the core whose axis is at a different orientation from the galaxy itself.

Many other small background galaxies are visible in the image. I especially like the two tiny galaxy pairs towards the top of the image - one looks like a small candle, the other like a set of small eyes (one of the eyes being a black eye).
