Description

I shot this M51 image with my RASA 11" telescope at a focal length of just 620mm.

Given the full frame format of the ASI6200mm, this is just a tiny crop of the complete image.

I shot the L channel at 1x1 binning, the color channels at 2x2.

The 1x1 binning renders 1.25"/pixel at 620mm. Since I shot a lot of subs using drizzle, I could drizzle integrate the image in Pixinsight to double the resolution, rendering 0.62"/pixel.

Now 1,2" is about the usual seeing here, and the nights where I shot this target were not particulary good (on the contrary in fact). I was very suprised to see that still the drizzle revealed quite a bit more details!

Since the RASA is not exactly a galaxy telescope I was considering a second setup, but now I might just wait with that and get more experience in galaxy postprocessing and see what more is possible at this focal lenght.

Speaking with a friend, we asked ourselves if in mediocre seeing a shorter focal length telescope may give better results at these pixel scales. What do you guys think?
