Description

This object is a spiral galaxy located 130 million light years away in the constellation of Canes Venatici at a declination of +40 degrees. This 11.9 magnitude galaxy spans 4 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to an actual diameter of 150,000 light years.

This is a beautiful slightly barred galaxy with many visible star clusters. Most of these star clusters are on the lower right side, towards the Hickson 68 five member galaxy group which is slightly out of the frame. This galaxy group is about the same distance away as NGC 5371 and is about 1 million light years from it.

The galaxy arms are discontinuous and hard to trace from the core to the outer edge. Faint star streams extend far beyond the end of the arms.

Thanks to Gotthard Stuhm for pointing out the supernova that I captured by accident in my image.
