Description

Upper sun pillar and the tangent arc ("V-fork") halo observed before, during and after the sunset on Jan 27, 2006 in Novosibirsk, RU (+54.9 deg. latitude) under the harsh weather conditions of

- Ground temp.: -38 deg. C (and dropping)
- RH: 48%
- Wind speed/direction: 11 km/h (S)

The acquired image sequence is based on single frame 1/30-1/500s exposures with handheld camera, and the FOV on the widest angle image in the sequence (by the longs side) is about 54 deg, while the FOV on the narrowest - about 5.9 deg (also by the long side). The current frame is a single ISO50 f/4.3 1/125s exposure.

The changes in shape of upper tangent arc, also observed here, as shown in the rev. E, at about 22-25 deg. above the sun even after it goes under the horizon down to -5 deg. are illustrated under [2] (the images below is taken from there, showing how the tangent arc turns from a shallow curve to the V shaped cusp as the sub goes down):
