Description

Elephant trunk nebula in narrowband, using the Hubble HSO palette and RGB imaging for the stars. In this revision the stars were removed using Starnet ++ in PixInsight, then the stars taken in RGB were added back in. I'm still not happy with the star saturation, but am still learning.

As described in Kanipe and Webb's "Annals of the Deep Sky", The Elephant Trunk Nebula is a part of the open star cluster IC 1396 in the constellation Cepheus. The IC 1396 complex is very large, almost 3 degrees in diameter. The various bright rimmed nebula and globules are areas of star formation. The Elephant Trunk itself is thought to be about 40 light years in length.
