Description

Dwarf irregular galaxy IC 1613 is a member of the Local Group. It lies about 2.4 million light years distant from us, which is just shy of the distance to M31. It is approaching the Milky Way at a speed of 234 km/sec.

Despite its irregularity, IC 1613 is not totally devoid of structure. Indeed, a bar-like structure, composed mostly of younger, blue stars, can be discerned extending from upper right to lower left across the bottom portion of the galaxy. Young, blue stars are in the minority in this galaxy; the bulk of its stellar population is composed of red stars that are about 7 billion years old.

IC 1613 has a very low surface brightness. As a result, I found this image incredibly difficult to process. Every attempt to highlight details within the galaxy resulted in an increase in noise. The final product that I am presenting here represents the best compromise I was able to achieve between detail and noise. I now understand why this galaxy, close as it is, is so seldom imaged by amateurs.
