Description

The Rosette nebula, located 5200 light years from us, is an HII region in Monoceros. It has a lot of structure and ongoing star formation that is interesting to explore. The details are especially prominent if imaged with narrowband H-alpha and Oxygen III filters, like in this image. H-alpha is here coded in a brownish tone and Oxygen III in a blue tone. So colors are not natural.

I took a picture of the same object about 2 years ago, but at that time I had my old Sony a7s camera without IR-CUT filter modification, so it blocked most of the H-alpha light. This time I used my rather new B/W ASI2600 camera instead,  without any H-alpha blocking. The H-alpha filter I used at that time was 12 nm wide, but this time it is more narrow, 3 nm. Even if I now use only half of the exposure time and use more narrow filters, I still get a much better image. I really enjoy the difference. So far, switching to a B/W sensor with filter wheel, has been really awarding. It is a BIG difference.
