Description

NGC 2736 is probably part of the expanding Vela Supernova remnant. Also known as the Pencil Nebula or Herschel's Ray, this nebula was discovered by astronomer John Herschel while observing from the Cape of Good Hope. It is about 815 light years away and estimated to be five light years long. The addition of Hydrogen Alpha and Oxygen III narrowband data to the RGB image displays the bright intertwined filaments of this nebula amidst the surrounding clouds of glowing Hydrogen gas.
