Description

The Eagle Nebula is a young open cluster of stars in the constellation Serpens, discovered by Jean-Philippe Loys de Chéseaux in 1745–46¹. It is also known as Messier 16 or M16, and as NGC 6611¹. The nebula contains several active star-forming gas and dust regions, including the famous "Pillars of Creation" imaged by the Hubble Space Telescope¹. The nebula is located 7,000 light-years from Earth and spans 70 by 55 light-years². The nebula has an apparent magnitude of 6, which means it can be seen with a small telescope².
