Description

5,000 light years away from Earth, IC 443 (known as the Jellyfish Nebula due to its shape) is a supernova remnant located in the constellation of Gemini. It is estimated that this nebula originated from a supernova that exploded between 3,000 and 30,000 years ago and that the core of the star responsible for this event formed a neutron star.
With a diameter of 70 light years, it is a very studied object due to its interaction with other molecular clouds.
This image is a false color known as Hubble Palette: a false color combination, patented with the Hubble Space Telescope, which is designed to map and contrast the distribution of ionized gases (hydrogen, oxygen and sulfur).
