Description

Sharpless 2-173 is a HII region estimated to be 6,500 – 10,000 light years distant in the constellation of Cassiopeia.  

Some folks see a resemblance to the mask used in the posters for the musical ‘Phantom of the Opera’.  As such, the object may be referred to as the Phantom of the Opera Nebula.

Sharpless 173 was photographed between 4 September and 7 October 2021.  Capture details are as follows:

Telescope: TEC 140 ED
Camera: QSI 690
Filters: Astrodon
Mount: 10 Micron GM 2000HPS

Ha: 50 x 1200s
Red: 42 x 300s
Green: 42 x 300s
Blue 35 x 300s

A total of 26 hours and 35 minutes exposure.
