Description

I extracted this closeup of NGC 3628 from the reprocessed image (3 January 2023) of the popular Leo Triplet that I originally recorded the 6 March 2021.

NGC 3628 (Arp317)
Also known as the Hamburger Galaxy or Sarah's Galaxy or Arp 317, is an unbarred spiral galaxy about 35 million light-years away in the constellation Leo. It was discovered by William Herschel in 1784. It has a diameter of 100000 light-years and has an approximately 300,000 light-years long tidal tail. Along with M65 and M66, NGC 3628 forms the Leo Triplet, a small group of interacting galaxies. Its most conspicuous feature is the broad and obscuring band of dust located along the outer edge of its spiral arms, effectively transecting the galaxy to the view from Earth.

Barely visible below the center of the image is a small nebulosity, that corresponds to a small satellite galaxy.
