Description

The double cluster in Perseus is a winter favourite - best viewed visually in a wide field scope, or ultra wide eyepiece if you enjoy such luxuries. I often view the individual clusters in my bino-viewer, comparing and contrasting the shapes and range of colours in this celestial gem.

As with all open clusters these are best framed in a star field, Taken with my DSI-IIC through a 75mm lens, I managed to emulate the sort of views that folks with wide field APOs enjoy. The range of colours is extraordinary... even if some of these are due to chromatic aberration in my lens, and a few hot pixels from my bayer matrix.

At 7,500 LY this double cluster is relatively close and largely made of young blue stars, and giants, interspersed with golden-yellow main sequence stars, which are obvious in the eyepiece. My version may be rather psychedelic, 'in the sky with diamonds'.
