Description

These are two of the fainter objects in the Sharpless catalog. They are the kind of objects where you can barely even see them on the individual subs, and they are only revealed when you integrate the subexposures. Sh2-224 is on the left, and it is a supernova remnant. There is a nice OIII shell visible, or at least two fragments of a shell. Sh2-223, on the right, is thought to be an HII region, which would explain the near-complete lack of OIII data. There is a faint SII signal in both objects, but I found that the usual SHO (“Hubble”) color palette didn’t give very good results given how faint both the SII and OIII are here. So I’ve used a modified HOO palette with some of the SII blended in to the red channel. This image spans over 3.5 x 2.2 degrees in the constellation Auriga. Both objects around 10,000 light years away.
