Description

The Needle galaxy, NGC 4565, is a spiral galaxy viewed edge-on from Earth. It is about 40 million light years away in the constellation Coma Berenices.

We are looking through the galaxy's disc hence the dark dust lane across the centre of the galaxy. It is a nice example of a spiral galaxy's structure with the galactic bulge prominent in the middle of the galaxy.

At a radius of 70,000 light years and containing about 1 trillion stars, it is similar in size to our nearest galactic neighbour the Andromeda galaxy.
