Description

This large grand design spiral galaxy is located 140 million light years away in the constellation of Virgo at a declination of -10 degrees.  It is a magnitude 13.8 Seyfert galaxy which spans 5 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 200,000 light years.  We are viewing this galaxy at about 35 degrees from edge-on.

The yellow core is surrounded by a bright oval inner region, which quickly transitions to a spiral arm structure.  It is fun to try to trace these arms as they extend from the inner to the outer galaxy disk.  It looks to me like the arms make 2 complete revolutions, which is unusual.  Blue star forming regions are seen along each arm.  Extended star streams are seen at the top and bottom extensions of the galaxy disk.

As usual, I am showing this image with north up and east left.
