Description

This is one of my favorite recent images. It captures several rarely imaged objects located in the constellation of Andromeda at a declination of +22 degrees, including Arp 65 and the NGC 80 galaxy group. The Astrobin mouseover annotation is helpful in understanding the description below. All of the objects are small but contain a great amount of detail.

Arp 65 consists of the pair of galaxies seen in the upper center of the image. These galaxies are both 250 million light years away and are each about 100,000 light years in diameter. NGC 93 is the top galaxy, an edge-on disturbed spiral galaxy with a reddish HII star formation region which is reminiscent of M82 (the Cigar Galaxy). NGC 90 is the bottom galaxy of the pair and is the most striking galaxy in the image. This is a fantastic object - an S-shaped face-on spiral galaxy, with 2 distinct arms and star streams left and right. The right star stream extends down and to the right for 150,000 light years.

The NGC 80 galaxy group is led by its namesake, the largest and bright galaxy in the group, towards the bottom of the image just left of center. A close second is NGC 83, just above and to the right of NGC 80. Just above and right of NGC 83 are 3 interesting and different galaxies - a blue irregular galaxy, a well structured spiral, and an elliptical. Many other interesting galaxies are scattered throughout the image.

Don't miss one of my favorite galaxies here. I expanded the view a bit just to make it fit - it lies in the very bottom right corner. This galaxy is IC 1542, an irregular galaxy.
