Description

The most striking object in this picture is the face-on galaxy NGC 5364 which was discovered twice from the Herschel brothers: On February 2, 1786 from William Herschel as NGC 5364 and on April 7, 1828 from John Herschel as NGC 5317. Together with the elliptical galaxy NGC 5363 the edge-on galaxies NGC 5348, 5356 ,5360 and many fainter objects (eg. LEDA 49400) NGC 5364 build a group which was examined by the armenian astronomer Abraham Mathessian in the 80s at the Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory. Mathessian listed this group as number 209 in his catalogue. Abell 1809 is a galaxy cluster with 78 members and located in the right part of the picture. The brightest member is NGC 5338 in a distance of 35 mio. lightyears.
