Description

Sh2-170, also called The Little Rosette, is an HII region located in the Perseus Arm about 7,500 light-years away, near the edge of a large superbubble that originates from the combined action of the stellar wind from the Cassiopeia OB5 stellar association. . Responsible for the ionization of its gases is a main sequence star with spectral class O9V, part of the small and young open cluster Stock 18. The edges of the ionized region are mostly blurred, indicating a lower density in the periphery, except on the southeast side; the ionizing star is located near the center, at the leading edge of an isolated small molecular cloud.
