Description

A variation of my Astrobin image "Alien Beyond the Veil" from this post subsequently appeared in APOD, but not in 2020 when I submitted it, but a year later, just ahead of Hallowe'en 2021! I had no idea that they hang on to anything for that long!

Also, the Astrobin image is a two-panel mosaic, but the APOD editors decided to crop and frame it in the more familiar orientation known as the Bat Nebula, and I was more than good with that!  So I've renamed this Astrobin post to "An Alien Beyond the Veil spawns a Bat!"

Please click on the "Original" image to see the full two-panel mosaic.

Thinking ahead to Hallowe'en, I framed a two-panel section of the Eastern Veil to produce an image that I hoped would evoke a terrifying Alien from the well-known movie franchise. I used two narrowband filters, and in this colour mapping the redder areas correspond primarily to Ha, and the bluer regions to OIII.

The mosaic combines just under 20 hours of subframes (divided roughly equally between the two filters), captured on eight nights in August. I reduced the image size for final presentation by 75%, since collimation and mount tracking on my new system had not yet been fully optimized. The final plate scale is about 0.62"/pixel, and the angular image size after cropping is about 31' x 55'.
