Description

THE ETA CARINAE NEBULA
- NGC 3372
- Deepsky 2860mm NIRRGB
- Constellation Carina

NGC 3372 is a well-known brightly glowing nebula complex in the constellation of Carina, also known as the Eta Carinae Nebula. It is about 7500 light-years from Earth and has a diameter of about 300 light-years and is considered one of the most impressive celestial objects in the southern sky.

The nebula complex includes various objects, including the Keyhole Nebula, the Homunculus Nebula (a type of nebula surrounding Eta Carinae itself), and the open star cluster Trumpler 16, which contains some of the most massive and hottest stars in our galaxy. Trumpler 14 is a young star cluster containing some of the hottest and most massive stars in the Milky Way. These stars ionize the surrounding gas, producing the nebula's characteristic red glow. The Keyhole Nebula is a dark keyhole-shaped cloud within the nebula complex that blocks the view of the Trumpler 14 star cluster beyond.

This emission nebula is also known for the Eta Carinae star system, which is one of the brightest and most massive stars in the galaxy. It consists of two stars that orbit each other and periodically vary in brightness. Eta Carinae became one of the brightest stars in the night sky due to an extraordinary eruption in the 19th century.
