Description

Another product of my October camping trip up to the Sacramento Valley Astronomical Society's dark sky site. The little nebula on the bottom left is NGC 7538, and the open cluster on the lower right is M52. Scattered throughout the field are more glowing gas clouds and some light-absorbing dust clouds.

The Bubble Nebula is a region of hydrogen gas excited by UV light from the stars within to glow a characteristic red color. The bubble shape is a result of the stellar wind from a massive, hot, young star (SAO 20575), whose mass is 44 times that of the Sun! The nebula was discovered in 1787 by the prolific observer William Herschel.

The nebula is about 11,000 lightyears away, which means that the bubble is 10 lightyears across! It can be found in the constellation Cassiopeia, which is an easily-recognizable W shape in the norther sky, not far from the North Star.
