Description

Gassendi crater in January ,7, one of the best examples of fractured floor craters, whose rilles network is about 155 km long. The rilles are attributed to the lava flow to the surface and subsequent crystallization in the lunar past. But the interest in Gassendi is not restricted to this feature. Gassendi has been studied for several decades and an analysis of the composition of its floor and the central mountains show that it is representative of extrusive volcanic activity on the Moon, with different compounds found in its surroundings. Also in 1966 the BAA Lunar Section, reported an appearance of medium incandescence - a TLP (transient lunar phenomenon) in Gassendi, suggesting an occurrence of gas escapes or other geological processes, that might indicates Moon might not be geologically “dead”.

Gassendi was also one of the locations considered for the landing spot of Apollo 17 mission (Dec 1972), with the aim of studying its differentiated geology, being later overcome by the Taurus-Littrow valley.
