NGC 5383

This face-on barred spiral galaxy is located 120 million light years away in the constellation of Canes Venatici at a declination of +42 degrees. It is a magnitude 12 galaxy which spans 2.3 arc-minutes in our apparent view. This corresponds to a diameter of 80,000 light years.

This galaxy has a number of interesting features. The yellow core is small, circular and compact but is surrounded by a bright point symmetric star forming region, blue in color. The bar is faint and huge in both length and width. The dust lane along the bar is dark, meandering, and asymmetric, spiraling into the core. At each end of the bar are bright blue ansae, also the source of intense star formation. The outer disk is diffuse.

This star formation in this galaxy could be the result of interaction with UGC 8877, the barred grand spiral galaxy immediately below it and the same distance away.
