Description

Another picture from the tilt diagnostic sessions. I spent a solid two nights trying to remove the tilt from the RASA. The first night I almost had it bang-on, a flat field all around save for just a little bit on one of the corners. Like Icarus I flew too close to the sun, as I decided I could get it perfect. Instead I just messed it up.

So that was night one.

The second night I once again managed to get it pretty decent but this time I had learned my lesson. I decided to test the RASA out on an actual object and by that time M101 was rising. I set the RASA to its task.

Turns out, because I had done all my adjustments on Capella when it was high up in the sky, pointing the RASA at M101 which was still at say 20 or 30 degrees was enough to have gravity introduce enough tilt to screw it all up.

So here is a severely cropped and resampled M101 to try and hide most of that.

The RASA is a heck of a scope. I am shocked that I could get what I did out of 3 hours in Bortle 8. The downside is for a telescope so sensitive to tilt they sure as hell did not make it easy to adjust. Turning off the camera, unplugging it, unscrewing it and then making adjustments only to screw the camera back in, power it up once more and take another picture is just not a winning strategy. I need to find a way to be able to adjust tilt without unscrewing the camera.

The intention was to take this bad boy out to dark skies and do a nice mosaic of Orion but with all these unknowns I decided to shelf the RASA in favour of the RedCat.
