Description

Beta Arietis (Sheratan) is a magnitude 2.66 A-class star in Aries, a little over 59 light-years distant. It has a smaller F-class companion, with an orbital period of 107 days. Like other stars of its class, Sheratan has strong hydrogen Balmer lines, but also has a few metal signatures. Studies have shown that Sheratan rotates rapidly, causing its absorption bands to broaden a bit, but I'm not sure that at my resolution it's really apparent. The blue line is an A5 v reference spectrum for comparison.

One anomaly that continues to puzzle me is that at a certain point in my spectra, reference lines match up very well: e.g., my Hβ line is pretty much dead on. But to the right, my absorption bands gradually shift to the right of the where they should be, and to the left they shift left. I haven't gotten around to studying it more systematically, but am wondering if it's due to some kind of chromatic distortion, or something else.
