Description

Together with Hickson Galaxy Group 68, NGC 5371 makes up the Big Lick Galaxy Group in Canes Venatici. This seems an unusual name for this galaxy group, as I have struggled to visualise any tongue shape!

Some digging reveals the name for this stellar group was named after Big Lick (now known as Roanoke Valley in Virginia) … a big salt lick marsh where prehistoric megafauna gathered. These giant beasts attracted hungry prehistoric spear hunters when they found the valley. Soon thereafter, all that was left to kill was small game, and fish in the Roanoke River.

These galaxies are too northerly to be imaged from my location, so I have used the amateur public data kindly shared on AstroBin by Michael Lorenz.
