Description

M31, the Andromeda Galaxy, our nearest major galactic neighbor. We are on a collision course with it; in about 4.5 billion years the Milky Way will merge with Andromeda to form an unified elliptical galaxy. But even though galaxies like Andromeda look crowded from our vantage point, in fact the distances between stars are so vast that it's extremely unlikely that any of the billions of stars in the "colliding" galaxies will actually strike one another directly.

Our galaxy has many small satellite galaxies, as does Andromeda. You can see two of them in this image: M32 is the bright fuzzy patch to the left of the Andromeda's bright center, and M110 is below to the right. You can make out M110's modest central bulge.
