Description

It has been cloudy here in the Bay Area, so I have been spending my time on image processing. I acquired this image using a 135 mm telephoto lens at f/2. The camera was mounted on top of my C8 telescope. The small pixel size of the camera (2.4 microns) seemed reasonably well suited for this target/lens combination. I used a gain setting on the camera of 200, with an offset of 30.

This imaging setup is quite fast, but is also sensitive to any tilt in the attachment between the camera and the lens. I used a Geoptik adaptor to minimize this problem. The one issue with this setup is the short working distance between the camera and the sensor. I wasn't able to find a filter wheel or drawer system that would work with the short spacing required and ended up having to remove the lens to change out the filters. Hopefully I can find a better solution at some point.

I acquired this from my back yard in the East Bay (south of Oakland, CA) with Red/White zone light pollution. I was definitely impressed with how much detail this camera/lens combination picked up given the conditions and relatively short exposure time.
