Description

Atlas and Hercules craters in the foreground to the always stunning Endymion crater, near the lunar NE rim.

Also in the field of view are Chevallier, Oersted, Williams, Grove, Mason, Plana, Burg, Cepheus and Baily (all in foreground), and Keldysh.
De La Rue and Strabo lie in the upper left.

The smooth floor of Endymion in the background is covered by low-albedo lava that makes it look smooth and dark.
The tell-tale string of 3 craterlets can just be made out on the floor of Endymion near the left-hand side crater wall.

The young crescent Moon is the best time to image Endymion. In one version of the Greek legend, Endymion was an attractive youth whom the Moon goddess Selene (often depicted wearing a crescent Moon on her head) laid to eternal sleep so she could forever enjoy his beauty.
