Description

This object is a grand design spiral galaxy located 50 million light years away in the constellation of Virgo at a declination of +8 degrees. This magnitude 11 galaxy spans 7 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 100,000 light years.

This galaxy has the classic beautiful color scheme - yellow core, blue arms and pink HII regions. Many bright star clusters are visible. The arm structure is still clear despite viewing this galaxy at about 45 degrees from face-on. The detail is easier to see because this galaxy is closer to us than most.

This galaxy has several nicknames - McLeish's Object, Lost Galaxy, Tao Galaxy - but I am not a big fan of nicknames unless they have a fascinating backstory, which these do not appear to have.

For those of you who enjoy scrutinizing the backgrounds of images, this is a fun one. Many small galaxies are visible, in particular I like the two tiny galaxies immediately below this object, both at 1.3 billion light years away. The "cluster" towards the upper right is also intriguing.
