The Eta Carinae nebula is four times larger and much brighter than the better know M42 (Orion) nebula seen in the northern hemisphere. The bright star Eta Carina (near the elbow of the L shaped dust lanes in this image) is luminous hyper giant star about 100-150 solar masses with luminosity 4 million times that of the sun, which erupts from time to time most recently in 1840. Contrasting brightness and dust makes this a surprisingly difficult object to image well.

The image consists of 243x300s and 125x30s exposures through Ha, OIII and SII filters for a total integration time of 21.3 hours. Camera gain was 100 (0.095 e-/ADU) at a temperature of -16 degC. Calibrated with darks, flats and bias frames. Combined in Pixinsight using Weighted Batch Preprocessing to produce master for each filter for each exposure time. Masters for 300s and 30S combined for each filter using HighDynamicRangeComposition. Each new master had Mure noise reduction and Deconvolution with Star Mask and external PSF, but no image mask.

While linear masters for each filter were combined into a composite RGB image, followed by BackgroundNeutralization with aggregated background previews, and an ArcSineStretch to boost the colours.

Imaged stretched with HistogramTransform, then denoised with MureDenoise, had dynamic range boosted with HDRMultiscaleTransform and sharpened with MultiscaleLinearTransform. Final adjustments with SCNR to remove green, CurvesTransform, SaturationBoost and fine tuning of the JPEG image in Apple OS Photos.
