Description

Living in the northern hemisphere, I am only familiar with the most notable deep sky objects in the southern hemisphere night sky. Only a couple of degrees away from the Tarantula Nebula, this field of view contains over a dozen NGC objects that I knew nothing about. The waves formed by ionized clouds of hydrogen driven by the energy of hot, young stars provide interesting detail in brighter nebula. In two other instances, stars have blown holes in the surrounding gas clouds, making ringed formations. All of this is surrounded by wisps of glowing hydrogen gas.

This image has encouraged to me learn a lot more about this area of the southern sky, the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). My research led me to discover the Henize catalogs of the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. The large patch of nebulosity at the top center of this field of view and neighboring "bubble" compose Henize N5 from Henize's catalog of nebula in the LMC. I am going to study this catalog more to see what other deep sky gems I can learn about.

I also found this short biography of Karl Gordon Henize interesting.
