Acquisition: Canon 90d and 300mm f/4 IS at f/4 (75mm aperture).

The main image is composed of 23, 43 second exposures at ISO 800 (16.5 minutes total) and is a dual-stretch to bring out more dust detail. The core was composed of 8 frames of 23 seconds, 10 frames of 13 seconds and 10 frames at 6 seconds (6.2 minutes total).

The main image was then blended in with the bright core to create the final HDR image (aggregate integration time of 22.7 minutes)

Tracking was done on a carbon fiber tripod with a Fornax Lighttrack ii. No guiding.

Processing used:Rawtherapee for color calibration, in-camera daylight white balance, exposure and highlight reduction, and lens correction profile. Color space: Rec 2020

DSS for aligning and stacking. Each exposure stacked separately. Gimp to reestablish color space.

Rnc-color-stretch for stretching all images. Each exposure stretched separately. PS to merge HDR composite image; as well as use of curves and levels tools for various adjustments to maintain contrast and color in image.

ImagesPlus and PS for final touchups.

Note: focusing was not on point, could not remove the purple aberrations pre- or post-stretch without damaging the nebula. Better focusing in the future will greatly enhance this picture.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
