Description

Among the most famous craters in the southern part of the moon, Clavius is among the largest and oldest. It is possible to observe it with binoculars and small telescopes between the first and third quarter phases. It is perhaps best known as the site of the fictional moon base in the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. It is also the site of a discovery of something amazing. Molecules containing hydrogen and oxygen have been found in many observations, strongly implying the presence of water.
