Description

About 1,500 light years away, in the constellation Auriga, is the bright nebula, The Flaming Star (IC 405). The glowing blue region in the top center of this image is created by the light from a massive, blue dwarf star, AE Aurigae, reflecting off of the surrounding dust. AE Aurigae was not formed in the location. It is a “runaway star” that was ejected two million years ago from the area of the Trapezium Cluster (Orion’s Sword) in a collision of two binary stars.

The data for this image were taken during three different years with two different telescopes. The 2018 data were taken with an SW Esprit 100 (550mm FL), and the 2019 and 2021 data with a WO FLT132 (925mm FL), all using the same ZWO ASI1600MM Pro camera and Astrodon filters. In this rendition, the 2018 data were used for color mapping, while the 2019 and 2021 narrow band data were used to create a master luminance. Only NB data with an HFR <2.7 were used in an effort to improve the structural detail of the object. My processing approach emphasized color and contrast choices that enhanced the three-dimensional appearance of the nebular structure.
