Description

This planetary nebula is located 7000 light years away in the constellation of Orion at a declination of +10 degrees.  It is known as the hidden planetary nebula because of the nearby 4.1 magnitude star Mu Orionis, whose brightness makes it a challenge to image the PN.  The star is only 150 light years away, much closer than Abell 12.

The PN is magnitude 12.4 and spans 40 arc-seconds in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 1.4 light years.  Like many PN, this object has a rim dominated by Ha and an inner region dominated by OIII.  I like the breakthrough region at the top of the object, perhaps caused by interaction with the interstellar medium (ISM).
