Description

Collinder 132 is a very large array of stars in the rich Milky Way of southern Canis Major. Situated between, and just south of, the stars Aludra, eta CMa, and Adhara, epsilon CMa, it consists of several dozen stars dispersed across a full 1.5 degrees of sky - perhaps a timely display of social distancing among the stars! The four brightest stars are 5th and 6th magnitude form a box with the corners oriented N-S and E-W, seen here in the upper right of the image. Cr 132 is classified as a Trumpler Type III 3 p open cluster with an integrated visual magnitude of 3.6, and is best seen with binoculars or at very low magnification.

Pers Collinder first recognized this cluster in 1931 as a low concentration physical grouping of 18 stars within an area of 85 arc minutes at an estimated distance of 880 light years. Subsequently, Clariá (1977) distinguished two groupings in this region, which were designated Cr 132a, containing 12 stars at a distance of 1830 light years, and Cr 132b, containing 8 stars at a distance of 1075 light years. More recent work by Orellan et al. (2010) confirmed the existence of an open cluster of 13 co-moving stars with an angular diameter of 20 arc minutes, centered around the "square" mentioned above, and at a distance of 1175 light years.

Oriented north up, the image was acquired under a waxing gibbous moon as an experiment to see if it was possible to acquire useful data under such conditions.
