Description

I have still to produce a good image of this interesting galaxy. This looks more like a ‘bruised eye’, showing some rather peculiar colour. The revision (mouseover) shows better detail and colour with less stretch and curves.

Messier 64 is a type 2 Seyfert galaxy, lying 17m LY away and 59,000 LY in diameter. It is inclined at 60 degrees to our line of sight, and is thought to consist of two distinct regions - a central core including the dust lane, which give it it’s more familiar moniker, and an outer, possibly counter-rotating diffuse region.

Sky time and quality were limited for this image, which I may try again before the season is out.
