Description

THE PENCIL NEBULA
- NGC 2736
- Deep sky 2860mm RGBHOO
- Constellation Vela

The Pencil Nebula (also known as NGC 2736) is a nebula in the southern constellation of Vela (Sails of the Ship), located about 800 light-years from Earth. The emission nebula is part of a larger H II region (a region of ionized hydrogen gas) illuminated by radiation from younger, hotter stars at the nebula's center. It is part of a larger structure called the Vela Supernova Remnant, which is the result of a supernova explosion that occurred around 11,000 to 12,000 years ago.

The Pencil Nebula got its name because of its unusual shape, resembling a pencil or a spear. This effect is caused by the presence of a dark band of dust running through the nebula, giving the impression of a "pierced" celestial body. This band of dust may actually help the hydrogen gas in this area become denser and cooler, favoring the formation of new stars.

It was first observed by the French astronomer Abbé Nicolas Louis de Lacaille in 1751 and later studied by the British astronomer John Herschel in the 19th century.
