Description

Starless version of the Carina Nebula image which I recently posted.

Stars were removed using the StarNet module for PixInsight:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/starnet/files/PixInsight_module/

Thanks to Nikita Misiura for developing this tool which becomes available under the "PROCESS " menu in PixInsight after installation. Much easier than iterations of star masks, MorphologicalTransformation, and MultiscaleMedianTransform.

The Carina nebula is massive, spanning approximately 3 degrees of sky and extending about 460 light years across. It's also bright at magnitude 1.0 and is easily seen with the naked eye under dark southern skies. I've always enjoyed seeing this nebula with its rich attractive starfield, but seeing it with stars removed reveals structures I had never previously appreciated, especially the dark nebulosity!
