Description

This object, the Head of the Seagull Nebula, is an emission nebula located in the constellation of Monoceros at a declination of -10 degrees. It is also known as Gum 1 and Sh2-292. The blue reflection nebula within is vdB 93.

This object is primarily a hydrogen region, with the gas ionized by the bright embedded 7th magnitude central star HD 53367. This star is the Seagull’s “Eye” and is 20 times the mass of our sun.

I particularly like the dark dust lane which streams left from the central star and the ionized fronts of gas at the right edge of the image.
