Description

A very dense, dark, and cold place, Barnard 174 (LDN 1165) is embedded in a rich star field in Cepheus.   This is an active star forming region, and what I like best about this image is that there's a distinct beam of light just piercing out of the dark cloud in "the neck" region.   I'm not sure I've seen such a striking example of a star beam piercing a dark nebula in other objects.   This beam is not an artifact (like star spikes from secondary veins).    A close up on that area is a treat.
