Description

From my facebook post:
In the constellation Hercules sits the most famous Globular Cluster in the galaxy containing around 300,000 stars with a diameter of 145 light years and 25,000 lights years away from us. This means it is super dense and stars are moving around so fast that they often collide. The results of these star collisions give us new stars, and those are the blue ones you see.

This cluster has fascinated our imaginations for centuries, and definitely gave inspiration to a key aspect of the new Disney movie Soul, which happens to be fantastic and is almost exactly what I have been telling Solomon.

You should know that this image contains over 3500 images 5 seconds cada una stacked together and took 3 nights of photos to create. Right now, it only is in view from my house starting at 2am. I wanted short exposures to focus more on the details and not the faintness. It took the computer over 30 hours to process and 300 gb of data. That isnt a typo. 300 gigs. The image still isnt as good as I would like, and just a slightly bigger scope would give me so many more stars. Oh the struggle. (I could have gotten the same image mas o menos with 200 photos, and the heavens don't require perfection, only that you try for it).

An interesting fact, that Arecibo telescope that just crashed down in Puerto Rico, well in the 70's it sent out a message to these 300,000 stars hoping that maybe one would have intelligent life. I don't really wonder much about aliens out there, but I do wonder what the sky would be like if I was on a planet in that cluster, and if I would ever experience darkness.

Lastly, for the Kurt Vonnegut fans and other weirdos like me, in The Sirens of Titan it is said, "Every passing hour brings the Solar System forty-three thousand miles closer to Globular Cluster M13 in Hercules—and still there are some misfits who insist that there is no such thing as progress."

Take a step forward everyday my friends.
