Description

For 20 long years I refrained (or maybe just couldn't, recalling the story of the fox and the grape) from imaging this most famed and characteristic of all the deep sky object. Easily the first object ever imaged by a budding astrophotographer. If I recall right, my first object was the Ring Nebula, again a popular object for first shot. This is not to say that I never shot M42, as I did on occasions to test either camera or camera/lens combo for sensitivity on this all important emission line, the H-Alpha. In a way, there is no way of doing this one right, it has been done since ages past and there is no way you can in any way present any new facet as all its facets have been imaged and re-imaged to death.

So, claiming no special claim to it and in fact no special interest other than to look at it and be not too displeased from what I see, here is the story: I shot M42 this time around to test my D5100 after its open-heart surgery (i.e. removal of the hot-mirror) and it looked pretty good in terms of overall response. Then I decided to go for it, for this one time only and added 3 more sessions. I originally planned to go deep on this one, with at least 6 hours worth of integration and see where a DSLR would take me but alas, the weather conspired and now the winter season is at an end and really, can I be bothered with imaging M42 ever again?
