Description

I was able to image Comet C/2020 F3 (Neowise) from my suburban DC backyard on the night of July 27, 2020. Between the light pollution in my backyard location, the ~30% illuminated moon, and the dimming of the comet, it was a lot harder to image than my first session about a week earlier. I was not able to find the comet in binoculars from my backyard, but the bright green coma was unmistakable in the images. My main goal of this session was to image the comet at longer focal lengths using my refractor. The coma shows some additional detail in these images, but like the camera lens pictures not much of the tail.

Imaged with WO GT81 at F4.7 (382 mm focal length) using Flat6A II field flattener/0.8x reducer and Nikon D750 with an exposure at ISO1600 x 15s. This is a stack of 25 images generated using Pixinsight. Images were alinged using the CometAlign process. Post-processed in Pixinsight: Cropped, gradient removal with ABE, MLT for noise reduction, stretched using masked stretch, Curves Transformation, TGVDenoise for noise reduction, HDR transform, Local histogram transform, morphological transform to shrink stars, and color saturation boost.
