Description

NGC 253, or Sculptor Galaxy, is the center of the Sculptor group at 12m lyr distance and a prototypical type SC. It is a starburst galaxy with active star formation and a central black hole about the same size as our own in Sagittarius A.  It is also an active source of X-rays and gamma rays.  According to S&T Mag., Dec 2021, it is also the home of a powerful gamma-ray flare which is believed to be the first magnetar found outside the Milky Way, (a magnetar being a special type of neutron star with ultra high magnetic field).

The 20.8h of data for this HaLRGB image is from DeepSkyWest (DSW) Chile collected 3 Sept 2021 to 3 Oct 2021.  North is up in this image. Processed by PixInsight 1.8.8-9, PS CS6.
