A Betelgeuse, é uma estrela de brilho variável sendo a 10ª ou 12ª estrela mais brilhante das que podem ser vistas da Terra. É também a segunda estrela mais brilhante na constelação de Orion.

Betelgeuse é uma supergigante vermelha. É muito maior que o Sol e já está em fase final da sua vida. Ela possui cerca de 11 massas solares, mas seu diâmetro varia de 550 a 950 vezes o da nossa Estrela.

Nos últimos meses ela tem chamado a atenção de todos, Betelgeuse começou a mostrar um comportamento bem diferente. Ela, que era uma das estrelas mais brilhantes do céu, vem perdendo esse posto de forma quase constante. Hoje, quando escrevemos esse texto (9 de fevereiro de 2020), já se pode perceber uma queda de 25% do seu brilho. Será que ela vai explodir e se tornar uma super nova? Todos estão de olho.
