Description

They are known as The Pleiades in the west, the Subaru in the east, al-Thurayya (The Chandelier) in the Middle East, M45 to the Beardo's of the world.. The Seven Sisters visited my neighborhood along with Taurus. This star cluster has been observed all over the ancient and modern world. They are of all star clusters the easiest to see with the naked eye. With the right equipment, a beautiful blue nebula can be seen, and with enough patience you find the whirling dust clouds of the dark nebula of Taurus surrounding them. They're a fitting reminder that sometimes we can look at the same thing and yet see things differently. The world today unfortunately spends too much time focusing on those differences instead of spending time understanding why we see things differently.

Perhaps they can also be a reminder of how we should be. Its said that in Arabic there are two words for light... one is Noor, and one is Siraj. It's said that Noor is used to describe light which is reflected, and Siraj is used to describe a lamp. It's fitting then that the Pleiades is described as The Chandelier in the same language. The Pleiades is a reflection nebula. The gases reflect the bright blue light given off by the hot young stars... while we often focus on the reflected light in this nebula it is always a good reminder that its beauty is not possible without the lamps burning brightly. This should remind us to be the lamps of the world... maybe we can make it a better place.
